There are several ways to lend your support to the Byrd

Annual Fund

The Annual Fund recognizes unrestricted gifts from individuals, businesses, and groups/associations across the programs and operating needs. Many of our supporters do not realize that revenue from ticket and concessions sales does not cover all of the Theatre’s costs of operations. The Foundation relies on gifts to our Annual Fund to continue to operate. Support the Annual Fund of The Byrd Theatre Foundation with a gift. Give online or mail your check, made out to Byrd Theatre Foundation, to 2908 W. Cary Street, Richmond, VA 23221.

Capital Projects

In 2024 The Foundation finalized a Historic Structures Report, a MEP Report (Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing), and a Concept & Feasibility Study. These reports are the roadmap the Foundation will be using to restore and rehabilitate the Theatre.

In 2024 The Foundation replaced its chiller for our HVAC system as well as installed a BAS (Building Automated System) control unit which automatically turns the heat or A/C on depending on the temperature of the Theatre as well as outdoor temperature.

In 2025, the Foundation replaced the antiquated balcony seats, many of which were original to the building, and replaced the two side sections of seats while adding two additional ADA platforms. These projects were completed in September 2025.

Our next big project is the facade where we will do much needed work to the brick and mortar, as well as restore the marquee back to the way it looked in 1928 and add back the blade, the 2-story vertical sign with B-Y-R-D in vertical letters. More details on this project are to come.

Additional projects will continue to be added as we proceed with the Theatre’s rehabilitation.

Sponsorships

The Foundation offers many sponsorship opportunities, including but not limited to Family Classics, Sunday Classics, Story Time at The Byrd, individual months, and Special Events (Studio Ghibli Fest, Richmond Animation Festival, The Big LeByrdski, and our WurliTzer Organ Fundraiser, among others).

You may elect to make an outright gift either of cash or securities as the most direct way to give. A gift of appreciated securities, whether publicly traded or from a private company, may provide greater tax advantages than gifts of cash. The donor can deduct the current fair market value as a charitable gift, avoiding capital gains tax on the appreciation.

You may choose to pledge to the organization. Pledges can be fulfilled over a period of one to five years. Here, too, gifts to the Annual Fund can be planned and pledged over the course of any special effort or campaign.

Donors can increase community support to the organization through corporate matching gifts programs. You (and/or your spouse) are encouraged to contact your employer or former employer to inquire about a matching gifts program.

There are a variety of planned giving options enabling donors to fulfill their commitment or even consider a larger gift level. Options promoted include: gifts of stock, real or other personal property; or, such deferred gifts as life insurance, annuities, lead and remainder trusts and bequests.
