Richmond’s French Film Festival Canceled for 2023 Season

Richmond, VA – March 9, 2023: In a brief announcement, Dr. Peter S. Kirkpatrick, co-director and co-founder of the French Film Festival, stated that organizers would be unable to hold the 29th annual French Film Festival scheduled to be held March 30-April 2, 2023. He stated that the difficult decision was made due to unexpected circumstances within the French Film Festival’s organization. No further details are available.

“We know that people in and around Richmond look forward to the French Film Festival each year, and we love to host it here at The Byrd Theatre,” said Benjamin Cronly, The Byrd Theatre Foundation’s Executive Director. “We were saddened to receive the announcement that the Festival organizers will be unable to hold the Festival this year.”

Richmond, Virginia’s French Film Festival was founded and organized by Drs. Peter and Françoise Kirkpatrick, professors of French literature, culture and film studies at Virginia Commonwealth University and University of Richmond respectively, and has distinguished itself over the years with numerous North American premiere screenings and several world premieres. The Byrd Theatre opened its 1,200-seat venue on Christmas Eve 1928. Individually listed in the National Register of Historic Places, and noted as a State and National Historic landmark, it is one of the nation’s finest cinema treasures.
