Expanded Repertory in 2017

New Year, New Byrd

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

RICHMOND, Va., December 8, 2016 –  In September, The Byrd Theatre launched new repertory programming that returned Jimmy Stewart, Grace Kelly, Humphrey Bogart, Elizabeth Taylor, Gene Kelly, Paul Newman, and Bing Crosby back to the Big Screen. In January, the series further expands anchoring about a dozen classic film offerings every month.

“The new additions will grow our repertory offerings by 175%,” said Grant Mizell, Foundation Vice President and Programming Chair. “And just like Family Classics has coffee, cartoon and Bob [Gulledge] playing the Wurlitzer, we’re focused on making each series unique, creating whole new reasons to love the Byrd.”

Big Screen Classics first launched as the title banner for two monthly series, Cinema for Cinephiles on first Wednesday evenings; and Hollywood Favorites on third Sundays. Cinema for Cinephiles, will now see expanded scheduling, with weekly showings beginning January. Hollywood Favorites retains its monthly slot, but earns pre-screening trivia, guest presenters and hosted film discussion. Together, the two series will follow monthly themes.

The Byrd’s Series Snapshot:

Cinema for Cinephiles: Eclectic titles with monthly themes, every Wednesday at 7:15p, starting January!
Family Classics: Saturday mornings at 10a, featuring Warner Bros Cartoon, Wurlitzer concert and serving Lamplighter Coffee.
Hollywood Favorites: Broad appeal, timeless features presented with trivia and hosted film discussion, 3rd Sundays at 2p.
Midnight Movies: Cult Classics, 3rd Saturdays at Midnight.
Sensory Friendly: Second run or classic family films with lights turned up and sound down, 3rd Saturdays at 2p.
